Support for Noisebridge

Dear San Francisco Writers Workshop community,

Since we’ve returned to in-person meetings after the pandemic, Noisebridge Hackerspace has provided us a space to hold our weekly meetings, for free.

Noisebridge is a unique space, allowing room for artists, makers, coders, and creatives of all kinds to experiment with their projects. A membership-based organization, it survives based on financial contributions of its paying members, while allowing groups like ours to meet on its premises without any charge.

Due to a series of financial setbacks (including the need to upgrade its infrastructure to code), this organization finds itself in a precarious situation. They lost access to some of the funds they were counting on to make rent. While they have a path toward financial solvency (in part, by growing their membership base), they are asking for our help to fundraise as a stop-gap measure.

Here’s a Go Fund Me page started by a Noisebridge member with more details on this ongoing saga. Please consider donating to this organization at this time. Noisebridge is 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. Your donation may be tax-deductible.

For us writers, Noisebridge has been an incredibly welcoming home. While we remain committed to the SFWW being free for all participants, think about what you’d spend on a writing class or working with a coach. Ask yourself, isn’t it worth a few dollars a month to have a place like Noisebridge that I can come to?

Our Website Update and Opportunities

Dear SFWW community,

We’ve just added two new publications to the SFWW website’s “Our Books” page, where we feature the work of our current and former regulars: Beverly Parayno’s excellent collection of stories Wildflowers that was published last year, and David Cleary’s novella My Year as a Boy in Asimov’s. Let Olga know if you have new books (or novella-length works) that she should add to this page.

Another new section on the website is “History” where we’d like to put more work that’s about the workshop itself. Take a look, and contact Olga with suggestions for material (bowlga at gmail) .

We occasionally receive emails with gig opportunities for writers. Here are two that seem legit.

1) Benjamin Lewis, the founder of an organization Engage As You Age that helps “older adults and seniors develop new and meaningful relationships through organized social visits,” is looking for smart and compassionate individuals to visit several new clients in San Francisco.

Benjamin writes: “Visits are conversation-based, in-person, and occur once a week for 2-3 hours at a time. Engage clients and employees must both be vaccinated against COVID-19. The work is paid at the rate of $25-30 an hour and the schedules are flexible. If you’re interested, feel free to reach out through the website, or email Benjamin Lewis blewis@engageasyouage.com.”

2) Ilyssa Kyu, the co-editor of the books Campfire Stories: Tales from America’s National Parks and TrailsVolume 1 and Volume 2 — writes: “We’re currently working on our next project bringing stories from beloved regions in the USA, and have selected the Redwoods Coast as one of our next locations.

I’m reaching out because we have a Call for Submissions for our forthcoming Campfire Stories: Redwood Coast book and thought you may want to share with your community! We’re seeking writers with existing stories about the Redwood Coast AND writers who’d like to be commissioned to write one. Folks can apply by March 15, 2024.

San Francisco Writers Workshop Holiday Schedule

Dear writers,

There will be NO workshop meeting this coming Tuesday, December 26, 2023. We’re taking this week off, and will be back at Noisebridge (272 Capp Street) on January 2, 2024.

On a different note, we are now using WordPress to send out this–and future–emails. Please let us know if you run into any problems.

Happy writing!
